I bought this product about a year ago and now when i try to make a cup
of espresso half the water comes out of the steam nozzel when it is on
the coffee only setting. its a piece of junk.
The knob on the left comes off

We stupidly bought this machine three times. It was cheap, and each one worked about one year. The problem each time is the knob on the left that controls steam to make coffee or steam milk. After the first machine, we painted a sign on the machine “Do Not Touch the Left Knob”, and we turned the machine off and on at the plug. Today, the knob just blew out (It took me three times to learn.). Nice machine, cheap, works well for one year.

the first Krups FND1 espresso maker stopped working within the first year. Just stopped…heat up and makes a lot of noise, but nothing comes out. Returned it to the company. They sent a replacement, same thing happened. we tried running it through a cleaning cycle, but still didn’t work. Maybe it’s because we only have espresso a few times a year, and it seizes up. I don’t know, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend this.

We had an older Krups espresso maker with a cracked and leaky carafe, beginning to show its age in other ways. We needed to replace the carafe, but this newer model was so affordable we could replace the whole machine at only twice the price of the carafe. We normally to use it daily to make coffee of almost but not quite espresso strength in an amount suited to an American mug (enough for one person at a time, and achievable by putting in more water than indicated, roughly 16 oz. to obtain 13 oz. of coffee). Since the filter is slightly smaller than that of the previous model, my wife finds that she has to fill the filter completely and tamp down the grounds, then add slightly more water than she was accustomed to with the previous machine to obtain enough coffee, but that it is still slightly weaker than she’d like. I have found a combination of quantity of grounds and water that produces results essentially identical to those of the previous model, which could be made to turn out coffee superior to Starbucks’ and Peets’. A great little machine at an unbeatable price. Sole reservation: with the machine on a counter under a cabinet, the light indicating it’s on (on top of the machine) is harder to see than a light on the front, occasionally exposing us to our idiocy of leaving the machine on after removing the carafe. Also, there was an initial plastic smell in use, but the more volatile molecules have drifted elsewhere, and the smell seems to have disappeared.

It’s a great value for the price. It is simple, straightforward, and fairly easy to use. I own one which I bought over a year ago, and just bought another one for a friend. There have been a couple of changes in the design since I bought my first one. I find the new one slighly more demanding – you have to pay more attention to what you are doing – but it’s great for making espresso and cappuccino at home. I make my own almond milk which steams/frothes perfectly. The investment practically pays for itself within a couple of months if you stop buying your latte etc. and make it at home.
Defective machine

We have bought and used several krups espresso machines over the years, but this one is pure JUNK! It is defective, and has never worked the way it should. The machine overheats, and water and steam start pouring out from everywhere. This machine should never have been sold (don’t know what kind of deal the vendor got). We don’t recommend buying from this vendor.

I was disappointed in this product and returned it. This new model of an old standby seemed not to be as well made as earlier models. The coffee bowl did not fit tightly in the maker and steam leaked out. Also the maker recommended that the coffee not be tamped down (as I have been doing for years), and indeed when I tried to tamp the coffee down in the bowl the steam made the coffee spurt up into the coffee maker and made a big mess. When not tamped down, the espresso was weak and not as tasteful. Finally, I did not like the split between the steam function and the espresso making function. All in all, I like the older models better.

This is the 2nd espresso maker of this model that we’ve owned. It is easy to operate and does a good job of making espresso for our lattes. The first machine I owned lasted about 15 years. I then bought a fancier machine that pooped out within a few months, so I went back to the old tried and true. I’m planning on getting another 15 years out of this one.
Decent machine for the price

I received this machine as a gift early on in my graduate career. It got me through my degree, and I love it for that, but it doesn’t have much life left to it.
Pros:
(1) Price – This is a very economically priced machine.
(2) Clean up – It is very easy to clean this machine. The final steam really does a good job “solidifying” the grounds. You just need to flip the little plastic holder over and tap into a trash can. Just make sure that you have a damp wash cloth around to wipe down the frothing wand right after you use it. (Note: this is good practice for *any* espresso machine.)
(3) Ease of use – The product is relatively easy to use.
Cons:
(1) No crema – Do not buy this machine if you want crema on your shots of espresso. You need a better machine.
(2) Plastic – Plastic, plastic everywhere! I took the little plastic shield off of my frothing wand. (Who would think that heating plastic to 140+ degrees is a good idea?) I wouldn’t be surprised if the machine isn’t BPA-free.
(3) No frothing pitcher – You need to buy your own one.
(4) Not much life to it – It only made it a couple of years before it really just started to fall apart. Right now, I have to use a piece of tape to hold the knob in just the right place to make espresso. I don’t even know if it can still froth milk. I’m too scared of moving the knob to much to find out.
MMMMM Espresso

I fell in love with this little machine when my brother turned me on to his. I couldn’t make enough coffee that weekend, I was hooked! I came home and started shopping for my own, I found it on Amazon for $20 less than what he paid for his. It is of course not as fast as a traditional coffee maker but defintiely worth the weight. Fresh beans are key for sure. The lid on the caraffe could be a little better designed, falls into my cup sometimes. Have not used the milk frother yet, I prefer my coffee black, but I have turned it on and it works. It is a simple to use, basic machine that produces an awesome cup of coffee. I highly recommend it for first time espresso machine users. And this is the best price you will find.
Leaks Steam of Water

I had this machine for a few weeks when it started leaking around the cup which holds the coffee. No matter how I inserted the coffee holder, every time steam of water evaporated. And it got worse the more I used it. I had to throw it away…

1. If you steam or froth milk regularly, descaling periodically is absolutely necessary to ensure that the steam nozzle does not eventually get clogged. Descale according to the schedule in the manual, or whenever you observe that steam is not coming out of the nozzle as rapidly as it used to, and frothing the milk is taking a lot longer.
2. If your coffee grind is course and water is moving through it too quickly, try using a tamper. You might also try adding a small amount of cocoa powder to the grounds.
3. Allow steaming through the filter cup (or steam nozzle) to stop completely before removing the water tank cap or the filter cup. Remove the water tank cap before removing the filter cup.
4. To froth soy milk, try preheating the milk in a microwave oven — about one minute per cup of milk, depending on the microwave power.
works well for awhile

I used this machine for a little over one year, once a day, sometimes twice. For that period of time it worked great. However, one morning I found that the steam that needs to build up in the inner chamber to brew the espresso was just leeking out of seems in the construction of the maker. It simply can not work like that.
For the time it did work, I thought it worked well. But it is not built to last. Price can’t be beat though.
Great for price, hard to clean steamer

I bought this machine a week ago. I considered the more expensive model but decided to give this one a try first. First couple of lattes were fantastic. Having never made espresso myself,I was pretty pleased that I was able to do it. However, after a couple of days the steamer wasn’t working as well and then was sending steam out but not frothing the milk. I almost returned it then I read these reviews. I had been taking the plastic steamer cover off and washing it after each use but wasn’t paying attention to the metal wand. When I looked at it, I thought it was rusted over. After about 10 minutes of scraping I saw metal again. The milk had dried on the metal and cloged up the steamer but not enough for steam to stop coming out, just enough to wreck my latte. Anyway, cleaned it and am back to having wonderful lattes. I definitely recommend this machine for the price and recommend it for newbies too. Just make sure to read the instruction booklet, to release steam after use and CLEAN metal wand in addition to plastic wand cover. Alos, bonus I forgot to mention is that I steam and froth the milk for my kids and add Ghirardelli chocolate cocoa powder and they are in heaven! They love “mom’s new maching”!
Disappointed in quality for a Krups

I bought this Krups espresso machine to replace a Krups espresso machine I have had for 13 years. I was really disappointed in the quality of the machine, lots of plastic parts have replaced what was metal. Feels a little cheap. Also, where the espresso basket attaches to the machine…it is not so tight and sometimes steam/water comes pouring out.
The espress it brews if fine…not fabulous, but fine for the typical user.
I am tempted to go back to my old Krups.
